To finish eight. After the dust as settled on our embarrassing performance last Friday night. Who really thinks hand on heart that we can.I know we are now having a discussion about Watson and his methods, and that in my opinion is justified. Its my opinion that he only as five drives and a kick and in normal times he should now be gone. But I realise like others have said we are stuck with him.I have also said that the peanuts we had to spend had to be spent wisely, they haven't so surely the coach should take responsibility,or does that responsibility lie elsewhere.Like others on Friday I left before the end that as never happended in 65 years people are not going to pay good money to watch that, and who can blame them.

Honestly, I don’t think we will make the top 8. We have slipped a little and I cant see the pack continuing to perform as they did for the first few games - they looked shattered on Friday. Without them dominating we don’t have the creativity or pace to beat teams from deep. I also expect Huddersfield and Catalans to pick up some form. I could be wrong, but in my opinion we won’t make the top 8 and will struggle in the middle 8.
Can I just point out though that not everyone is questioning Watson. I think he’s doing a decent job with what he has. I agree recruitment was poor but we can’t put all the blame for that at his door.

Pretty fair assessment, think 8th might just be possible but there can't be the lack of attacking prowess and we need to find our defensive chi again.
As Dixon says I think Hudds will come good under a new coach and give us a run for 8th, Widnes and Catalan look like they are already resigned to it, can't see any of them/us beating Toronto or Leigh and wouldn't fancy a trip on short notice to Toulouse either.
I said this privately to Carnster before the start of the season and sadly the more we progress into this season I fear it becomes closer to be inevitable but if we are in the middle 8's and sink I doubt the club will start next season in it's current guise, ergo we need to make the top 8 or I fear we'll go under.

After watching Toronto today dont think they are half as good as made out to be. A rough/tough forward pack but distinctly average in the halves and backs.

They're a typical Rowley team: a disgrace to the game.

One thing that does worry me is that the structure for next season is still unsure (only in RL could we be midway of the preceding season unsure of how the following season will be), can't see anything but the RFL moving heaven. earth and sadly goalposts to ensure the Toronto Thugs being crowbarred into the top flight, feel sure that this would be done with little regard for Salford, Widnes or Hull KR. Can't see they would want Catalans dropping out of the top flight so would expect a French reprieve in the hopes of a French team derby in the very near future.

I expect the teams below us to improve but if we win the next 2 games we'll surely be favourites for 8th. Let's hope Lui is back asap.

I understand your frustrations, I also left early, admittedly only a couple of minutes but for the very same reasons as everyone else, I was embarrassed the gulf between us & Leigh was massive. Having had time to reflect we are unfortunately where we are, I think Watson is doing an ok job with the resources he as, ask any other coach to make the half back pairing we have to work, I am sure each coach would struggle, the budget reflects the player we employ? The tactics were appalling on Friday night, however to say Watson is a 5 drives & a kick man is wrong, having watched the style we played with Lui, Dobson, O'Brian & Big Ben would make a difference to any team & the style that we played. on Friday he tried to play to his strengths the pack, it back fired. You can only play with what we have & if the Salford public continue to decline in watching the only professional rugby club, no coach will make any difference & without an academy the future looks bleak.

The trouble is if we make 8th and survive this season, it's what happens next season with no money to recruit I think we will really struggle For what it's worth I would look at putting Wood at 7 Flash at 6 ( he has played there at Saints ) Tyronne at 9 (he has played there with Ireland ) with Tomkins

Maybe have JLJ on the bench as cover

The chance of us getting 8th will be equal to the amount of time Lui is on the pitch. We are seriously reliant on his ability. I think we can do it, but it's going to be a tough ask.

I'll be honest the more I look at this weekends game the more I think it's the crux of the season, moral will be low after 2 crushing defeats and then a lesson on how to play from a lower league side. Catalan brings about a run of games we need to win to ensure safety (and in all likelihood survival) lose to them and I can see us struggling to beat any of our fellow struggler's.
To say we need Lui back might be the understatement of the season.

The problem is that 3 of those players no longer play for us. It is the same with the situation with the wingers. Having Carney come in and utilise him as effectively another forward worked for a time but with the current wingers it is not something we can employ but still do. The other issue I have with this is that it worked in most for the first half of last season but once teams had figured out what was coming we had no plan 'B' and still don't. Last season bore all the same similarities to when Karl Harrison was in charge. The first part of the season under Rhino we were good and played a certain way. However once teams cottoned on to how to counter our attack we stumbled in to the playoffs on a very poor run of form and were duly spanked by Bradford. Nothing changed in the off season and we continued the next season to try and still play the same style and ultimately, Rhino was sacked and we were relegated. I've nothing personal against Watson but since magic weekend last year we have been on a downward trajectory as teams know how to counter our very limited play. If Shaun McRae was in charge of us and had overseen the past year there was be total outcry for a change and to be fair to McRae the squad he had back then you could say is in some part weaker to what we have now.
