It was an excellent program, well put together, well researched and very well presented and the RFU and especially the Welsh RFU should hang their heads in shame over their shameful roles since 1895 onwards. The treatment meted out to many ordinary people who wanted to look after their families was disgraceful and cannot be defended in any way whatsoever and it was worse than I ever thought that it was.

Yeah I though it was well balanced, and the presenter came out of it very well and the rfu and wru didn't which is always good for a laugh. I would've liked one player to be interviewed who said I wish I'd done it earlier or I made a great move, enjoyed every minute.

Really enjoyed it.
Thought RL came out of it very well, and should be rightly proud of its embracing of these lads, especially black players who were treated terribly by RU. Yet put on pedestals by northern communities.

And the fact that Union players were being paid, long before 1995. But unlike their League counterparts, they were not paying tax on these brown envelope payments.

I did like the line from Gareth Edwards that the difference between union and league players was that league players paid tax.
Also thought that Alex Murphy came across as even more of a tool than normal when he was interviewed back in the day.

One of the great sporting documentaries which highlighted the Welsh colour bar which I wasn’t really aware of. Felt sorry for Alec Murphy. He’s far better than he was portrayed. I think Peter Smethurst said something similar until David Watkins started to produce more winning money for the whole team. Smethurst became a staunch supporter !

Nothing wrong with what Murphy said. He never got the money they did and was better than Watkins, Davies. My memory of him at the Willows was near the end of a match laying Watkins out on the half way line near to touch. Watkins got up kicked a penalty goal to win the match. Murph went over congratulated him and walked off the pitch with his arms round his shoulder. He then said in the press that he admired and respected him and that he was a good player.
Murphy had everything including a rugby league brain. Brilliant but not to be messed with.

I think that was the Leigh game where Murphy said he wouldn’t have a hair cut until Leigh’s winning run finished. And,as you say,he flattened DW who kicked the winning goal from the touch line. I think that was my point,Murphy came over in the documentary as quite bitter. I think he was a far fairer bloke than that, except when he winked at Sid Hynes.

Just watched it. Fabulous programme that’s given me more ammunition for m6 arguments against union supporting friends 😂 I enjoyed the brief glimpses of Salford welcoming Paul Bishop to RL and that he remembers the grief off the crowd Jonathan Davies’s first game was an A Team (remember them??) game against Salford if I remember correctly. At Naughton Park. About 10 000 turned up for it

About 10 000 turned up for it Yeah the crowds turning up for debuts was amazing at times for the bigger names which does indicate the power of coverage at the time when half of them had no idea who the player was. Press coverage is something yoonion gets in shed loads and we're allowed sparingly now and again when they feel like for those who never but newspapers.
