Surprised we've all missed this over the last couple of days. www.thesportsman.com/articles/is-marwan-koukash-about-to-get-back-into-rugby-leagueFor me he wouldn't be remotely interested in this if he hadn't already had some form of assurance from the powers that be that a Cumbrian team if formed would be in SL and leads me to think that the reformatting of the league is actually going to see an increase in numbers. With Leigh looking likely to struggle you'd think that say we went to 14 teams next year then Cumbria and if indeed Leigh do miss out they will get a reprieve and join the winner of the Middle 8's. The issue with that would come if say a SL team lost out in the Million pound game and a team got fast tracked into the top flight.

It would be good to have a viable Cumbrian team but I wonder if a new team can be given the relatively small population and big travelling distances. I can’t see how they would get a crowd. The 3 clubs would have to accept becoming feeders for the new one. It could be a way of getting round the hostility to mergers but it will be tricky. There’s no way this could be ready for next season though. No ground, no players, etc
The smart money seems to be on 2 divisions of 10 with 1 up and down. So I reckon that will be the 12 current SL clubs plus London, Toulouse, Toronto and 5 other championship clubs - I guess the full time ones are most likely but whether that is decided on a franchise or finishing place basis, who knows
