While I freely admit we need someone of his undoubted ability to help make the game more popular and increase it's profile there is one quote in this brilliant interview that encapsulates the nagging doubt I have about him. “Rugby league isn’t hot and if it’s not, while Sky will always do a great job, they won’t be all over it. They’re all over boxing, because boxing’s hot. They love it. Rugby league has got a good broadcast deal and let’s be clear, they’ve got a future – this isn’t a scenario where they’re in danger. But there are kids in gyms saying they want to be the new Anthony Joshua. Who are they saying that about in rugby league? I don’t know.” His close links to all things Sky worry me deeply, if he thinks the deal we signed with is a good broadcast deal I'd hate to see his definition of a bad one. I think the term "good" is relative. Whether we like it or not Rugby League is for all intents and purposes a minority sport. If you consider it in terms like that then the TV deal isnt bad.
If you consider it in terms of the Potential of the game then it is less competitive.
However to realize that potential it will require someone with Hearns know how in order to change non RL supporters perceptions.

Boxing in the UK has taken a marked upsurge in popularity after an extended lull, granted this is partly due to the success and popularity of Anthony Joshua and a slightly healthier heavyweight division, but I think its fair to attribute some of that upsurge to Hearns management. He also has a decent relationship with a major broadcaster in Sky (I accept that some people may not think this is such a good thing) and a relatively high profile himself which as far as I am concerned means that his involvement alone could help to raise the profile of our great sport. Just my opinion anyway mate.

It’s all about opinions isn’t it! In my opinion he hasn’t done too much for boxIng, it’s never been on the ropes (pardon the pun!) as such other than heavyweight where he has fell slightly lucky, but you make your own luck I guess. Some of the fights and cards he puts on are garbage, one sided beatings, not great for the sport. He makes a lot of money for himself and his boxers and that’s great, but I don’t think he cares about the wider perception of the sport.
We need change, that’s clear, I would just be a little fearful of someone like Hearn. I don’t think he’d care for teams like salford, Widnes, wakey. I think there are better alternatives within the sport, it’s just whether they get the chance with the current set up.
