Reports state that Nigel Wood secured a pay off of £500,000 when he left the RFL. Could this indicate he was asked to leave ? Whether or not that’s the case it’s disgusting. Reward for failure ? My bigger fear is that it must have been signed off by the non exec directors, the same guys tasked with replacing him. I fear the worst, which is a replacement from the existing administration.

Many years ago it was said Rugby Union was an amateur game run by professionals and Rugby League was a professional game run by amateurs.Rugby Union is now a professional game run by professionals.League is still run by amateurs and the club chairmen are to blame for that.

That's not unusual in board room situations where a Chief Exec is 'asked' to leave. Unless the RFL can show that he has breached his contract, or they are prepared to manage him out (very difficult at that level), they have no choice but to agree a mutual compromise position which inevitably involves a payment. This is offset against future benefits (salary / pension / bonus etc).
Sadly, it just ends up costing the sport.

I'd love to have a job where I'm given a shed load of cash for under-performing.

As I understand it, Mr Wood had to stand down in order to take up the position of head of the international game ( apparently you cannot be associated with any member country to head the world game ) If this is so why is any payment necessary? He is going for his own benefit building another personal empire.

As sickening as it is that he's pocketing such a vast sum for essentially dining out (literally) on his position for years and providing no leadership whatsoever, I'm just glad to see the back of the odious buffoon. RL at a proper crossroads now though, balls up the appointment of the next CEO and the sport remains in the dark ages forever and a day. Ralph Rimmer clearly not up to the task. Big, bold decisions required.

It could be RL is heading for bankruptcy and this is a bonus (cue other national firms, sound of horns , etc.) ;-)
Another point. Without Mr Wood, we may not have been bailed out by the good doctor.

That’s the theory anyway but,as Estagnol correctly states, we were led to believe that he’d been offered the International role in which case severance wouldn’t apply. He’d be wanting to leave early ! Look, unless we know what actually went on then we can’t be certain how the contractual position stood. All I would say is that if the non execs paid him for a job well done then there’s a disconnect between their cloistered view and the views of the majority on the terraces.

Think this will help the current discussions for the SL chairman's to have a greater say in things, can't see anyone with even a miniscule brain thinking this is good business.
I smell the old boys network doing what it does best.
Dr K for chairman 😂
