It would suggest that we've got someone lined-up, as I wouldn't see the benefit in releasing a squad player with the Middle 8's looming.

It's the time of the year when players and Clubs look to secure their future for next season. It's a tough one for everyone involved as players look to secure some financial stability for themselves and Family in the short term, and Clubs are looking at the make-up of the next seasons squad.
It's at least heartening to see players treated well with early releases and best wishes. Amicable rather than hostile as it's sometimes been in the past is always good for both parties.

I hope that he doesn't end up playing for a team that we end up playing in the Middle 8's. He's a decent player.
Does anyone know whether this is to free-up cap space, or did we already have cap space available before his release?

I can't see it being about cap space. The Club said we had room when the season started, and Forster, with respect, wouldn't be a high earner imo.
