Definitely wouldn’t let Costello leave. He’s our only real cover at centre and full back. And he has played well in 2 games hes played.
Bringing Wells or Johnson back for a while isn’t a bad shout. Seems odd to let Lannon leave. He can do a job at prop. No world heater but he works hard

Was thinking while watching Brisbane earlier that we should try and sign that Payne Haas. Looks like he could become a decent player under Rowley….
Could go either way tomorrow. If their forwards get a roll on and Connor has one of his good days it could be a long afternoon. If our plans work an passes stick we could run them ragged again

I assume Wright will be the 4th prop. Or Dupree might do all 80 minutes this week! I reckon Williams and Hellewell miss out:
Brierley Sio Cross Costello Burgess Croft Sneyd Dupree Atkin Ormondroyd Watkins Dixon Addy
King Wright Longstaff Stone

Warrington:
Thewlis Wrench Darbyshire Lynch Thewlis Jr Dean Hayes Philbin Thomas Reddeclife Schingler Doolan Currie Whitehead Holroyd
So 15 of their 34 man squad is either on academy graduate £20k or is eligible for salary cap discount
Realistically the difference is that the youngsters enable the big clubs to name 22 man squads during injury crises unlike us getting to 19.
By the way I think we do pay relatively high wages for the quality of our players. Partly cos we have to. Players will play for less cash if they are more likely to win trophies (or the club has a recent history of doing so) and if they have been there since they were kids. Part of it is just cos that’s what we do.
But realistically most other SL clubs have a 25 man squad who have a chance of playing regularly plus kids to give cover in emergencies and rest an extra player or two through the season. Our top 20 or so are paid a similar level to other clubs top 20-25 but we discount less against marquee and home grown rules. Think we are £3-400k below salary cap. For most clubs c£150k of that will be 7 young players who have little chance of playing more than a game or two.
Other SL clubs without a cat 1 academy
Leigh have a 28 man squad and haven’t had a proper academy for years. Hull KR have 31 and will benefit from the old City of Hull academy Cas have 36 (!!) but haven’t had the disruption in their junior development that we have
All 3 of those will be closer to the cap than us but I wouldn’t swap our squad for any of theirs.

Wigan, as an example, home grown players in 1st team squad are, I think:
Marshall Smith Powell Byrne Farrell Smithies Harvard Pearce-Paul Shorrocks Thorniley O’Neill Astley Sutton Hill Nsemba Eckersley Douglas Hampshire
Possibly Tom Forber too
My guess is that all those from O’Neill down will be on £20k contracts except Hampshire. Possibly Shorrocks and Thorniley too. That’s 7-9 players. Or 20-25% of the squad. We don’t have that luxury. One or two of the lads who were part time might not be on much more than that but we can’t afford to fill our squad cos we have to pay them more money.
Of the top 8, some of those will be on over £70k so the rest won’t count towards the cap

I think we’re in a stronger position than last year. We were struggling to buy a win this time last year with Burgess, Sarge and King injured
Sarge only played about 6 games last year due to injuries so, while he’s a big loss on paper, not sure he is in reality. Personally I think we’re better off without Escare but we are short of full back cover. Cross, Lafai and Sio played every game last year so we didn’t need much cover.
We have same lack of cover in halves and hooker as last year. Of the forwards we lost, Luckley is a loss but Sidlow is looking a good replacement, and we have loads of 2nd rowers to cover Livett leaving.
I bet our average wage is as high or higher than most other super league teams. Saints, Wigan, Warrington, Huddersfield, Catalans and a few others will have 6-8 academy products on the SL minimum wage of £20k. Then a number of them - Welsby, Lomax, Thewlis, Smith, Newman, etc who will get the discount off the salary cap along with the marquee signing players. Warrington will have less advantage than Wigan, saints, Leeds for that as they have fewer academy products in the team.

Leo’s a great lad. There were six, including Leo, from Salford City Roosters in the u16s last night plus another one who was at Roosters til he was 15. Great to see local lads being given a chance.
Aussie journalist, John Davidson, tweeted about this so it was great to see it attracting some national attention.
And building the links even further Adrian is now one of the Roosters u7s coaches with a team that includes his youngest, 2 Sio lads and a Lafai!!

Women’s Super League season launched today. Excited to see how Salford go in Super League 2 and in the challenge cup for the first time.
Also Salford Roosters launched their 1st ever all girls team today. Salford scrum half Demi Jones is one of the coaches

I agree with pretty much everything Black Dragon Books said above. I wouldn’t go so hard on Borouh - Lafai should have nailed French for the first try but went for the spectacular hit rather than a solid tackle and Dupreee bought the dummy. Borouh should also have done better. For his second try French just walked through a massive gap when we lost all our shape in defence, almost the only time last night.
Personally I think we should have bigger expectations now. It’s the best squad we’ve had in years, poss in whole of SL. We were by far the better team and we should have won that game. We were gassed in the last 10 minutes but with the field position and possession we had we should have been another try or two clear which would have won us the game. What French did for Wigan one if stars should have done for us. Wigan were poor.
I wonder if it’s a mental thing with our team. I’m not sure we believed we could win that game last night. We were playing Wigan teams of the past in our heads rather than the one on the pitch in front of us. If that had been Huddersfield, Hull or Cas we would have taken them apart.
None of this is to fault the effort which was fantastic and not one player had a bad game. Just the odd decision here and there in attack and defence that made the difference. We did miss Ackers, he’s pretty much our most important player these days.
I don’t but the ‘people playing out of position’ line. The only one moved was Watkins who went to centre where he had a storming World Cup playing for England.
But it’s a positive that we are disappointed with a narrow loss, it shows how far we’ve come. Only complaint is that we didn’t get the win.

It’s a game we should have won. Had 55% possession in 1st half and went in drawing. Massively dominant fit quarter 3 and only came up with one try. Lots of positives but that’s 3 games list that we should have won.

Think the biggest issue is that Koukash closed our Elite academy set up. When we recently applied for it again we were denied it by the RFL. I imagine this is one of the reasons IMG couldn't put Elite Academies in their criteria. So players will likely still go to Warrington and Wigan etc until this is addressed. I agree. The academy was run poorly in Koukash’s time so it failed the assessment and funding was withdrawn and he refused to cover it. Just like he refused to spend money on pretty much anything that wasn’t 1st team players (stadium primacy, off field activity, community club engagement, changing the logo on the stadium). We now have a really good set up with the elite academy with some great coaches involved but still no money to fund it properly. But it’s better than it has been, probably since the later 90s / early 2000s in terms of personnel, structure and scouting

I know that some of not all of the Roosters would have preferred to join salfords academy if they could have offered a wage and the other wrap arounds you get at Warrington.
Sone roosters in the current salford 16s and 18s and some salford lads who play from non-salford teams. Plus some from other salford community clubs. One rooster recently signed for Cas academy I believe.
Can’t insist on them joining their nearest academy, all kinds of things to take into account. Just like some will play amateur for nearest team and others will travel at all age groups. But salford will continue to lose out on players til they can match the offers of other clubs academies

First try wasn’t a guessed pass. Or if it is, it’s very marginal. The passer is in front of the catcher at point of pass and point of catch despite being half stopped in a tackle. As the Rules state - The direction of a pass is relative to the player making it and not to the actual path relative to the ground
