Given Yates failed his HIA last week and Watto said Sarge and moose might be out for a few weeks, I wonder if they are just in the 21 to make up the numbers? If they are, the team pretty much picks itself
Evalds Sio Welham Kear Williams Tui Atkin Burke Jones Dudson Pauli Roberts Flash
Joey Seb Johnson Lannon
*edit - just seen the club twitter feed saying moose will be linking up with Dudson on the field so I guess he is playing then? I’d replace Burke with him. But going off Watto usual choices this season I think flash of Johnson will miss out (if Burke fit)

Tonight’s thrashing of Warrington maybe puts our performance last week in a better light!

Even with the injuries that’s quite a scary back line. We should have too much in the forwards for them. But then I thought before Huddersfield and Leeds too!

Just watched the highlights of the game. The controversial ‘tackled in the air’ moment.... Evalds left foot hits the floor a fraction before he’s tackled. It’s very, very close but it’s floor before he’s hit. Referee in a good position and makes the right call.
Myler might have been fractionally off side when Lui kicked it. I think the rule is both feet have to behind/level with the ball when it’s kicked. If that’s the case I reckon he’s less than a stride off side. If it’s one foot then he’s probably ok.
Can’t see what the penalty is for against Dudson. His back foot is on the line and the call is played before he goes for the dummy half. I’m not absolutely sure of the rule there though. Normally it’s just back foot has to be on side. usually that’s in line with the ref but on the try line if you have your front foot forward you could be past the play the ball and on side which can’t be right. So I’m not sure whether that’s the right call or not

Just the wind today I think. Not wanting to risk kicking for touch in that gale.

Apparently Gigot is to play for Toronto for free for a month as they've reached their salary cap😉😉😉 They should be made to register him as a marquee signing then. This is what I was worried about Toronto are getting dispensation. I dread to see what will happen if they finish bottom of the pile at the end of the season. They are not getting dispensation. They have registered him as a trialist which means he can play for the club for a month for free. All clubs can do it. Such an experienced player being counted as a trialist is stretching it a bit but it’s within the rules. Toronto have had to pay over the odds to get players to drop down to championship level. It means they have more players of SL level than most who get promoted but it means they’ve run out of cap space. It’s a massive challenge getting promoted and staying in super league. Were Wakefield the last team to manage it? I think they’re the only club to have been promoted to super league and have not since been relegated? London came close but failed. Leigh up then down same season. (Twice I think?). Us, KR, Huddersfield, Widnes all been relegated since first getting to super league. That suggest to me that there’s a structural problem and we need to look at different way of managing movement between the divisions. *edit - hull haven’t been relegated since promoted but they only survived due to their dodgy ‘merger’ with Gateshead

Inu will probably be in the team this week if Sarge is out. I don’t think we can judge the kickers yet. Tui is a decent kicker. Against Toronto no one would have kicked well in that wind. Last week he had 2 kicks from the touchline and nailed one of them.
The 4 backs we’ve been playing are the ones who earned their places in pre-season. Sio has looked a bit ropey in the last couple of games and is most at risk I think apart from injury. Welham gets criticism and people saying drop him every year and he proves the critics wrong every year.
Inu does have a bit of magic in him. He will try things that others won’t and we could do with a bit of that at the minute. But he is as likely to make a mistake as he is to come up with a magic play. Remember the off load at Wigan in the play offs, his kicking out on the full and short kick offs when we had narrow leads. He made half a dozen handling errrs in the pre season games this year. I loved watching him on the wing last year and he had some awesome performances but he didn’t play well at centre and he won’t transform the team.
Chamberlain looked poor in the pre season games. His defence was poor and mistakes like allowing himself to be tackled 10m out from our line and being driven back over the dead ball line won’t have done his chances any favours.
Evalds pivot play is fine. Not brilliant but good enough. He’s greedy. You don’t get to score as many tries as he does by giving the ball away 5 or 10m out all the time. Gaz O’Brien was a much better pivot but I’d rather have Evalds direct style. We get more tries from it. Evalds passes when he has no chance of scoring or there is an obvious overlap. I think his try scoring record shows that he makes the right decision more often than not.
I can understand people’s frustration with the kicking game. It is a deliberate ploy in many games to put it high to the winger. It stops the winger running it out and putting the team on the front foot as it gives the chase time to close him down. It’s a fairly negative tactic but when we get it right it serves us well. When our forwards are on top it allows our centres to challenge for the ball. Welham is especially good at that
As for the ‘5 drives and a kick’. Watson is a big believer in tiring the opponents out and taking advantage once they do tire. They will target different defenders depending on the opposition but the middles take plenty of hammer with the drives from our props and the drop off balls to the back rowers running back inside.
I think the problems so far have been our timings in attack and defence aren’t quite there yet. That has to improve and it should do as the season goes on. And we are not being clinical enough. Sio should have scored both of those tries that were disallowed against huddersfield. He scores one and we win. He was a bit unlucky with the one at saints but we score that one and the game maybe goes differently. We are getting field position and not coming away with the points. If we can fix that up we will be fine

If I was going to drop either were winger it would be Sio. Not sure he deserved it but Williams has been one of our best players so far so has to be in the team. No need to panic, keep tuning. We will miss Brown if he’s banned there will be a lot of pressure on Tui as Atkin isn’t a creative or organisational half from what I’ve seen but if we make a break he’ll be on the shoulder. Having Dudson and Seb back is massive

The last World Cup here was brilliant and the 2021 is already being well trailed. Even did the draw we Buckingham Palace and got days of coverage.
I don’t have a problem with a mixed approach. Toronto can be a yo-yo club for the next 10 years. If they and the RFL start working more with the USRL and get another lower league North American club then the players will start to come through. They have massively increased interest in RL and now need to harness it. The problem with just starting with schools and community is thee the players have nowhere local and to go and they leave for bigger SL clubs like has happened to london.
Newcastle are doing really well - they have 4 in the England academy squad (we have 0 of course). They need the Thunder to become at least a solid championship club though or the kids have nowhere local to go and the profile of the sport doesn’t grow there

Just seen a stat watching the game back. I’m the first half we had 57% possession. We had 36 more carries than them.
But we went in at half time losing. And even more amazingly only ran 20 metres more than them. How is that even possible??

I know We don’t have to hit our straps until the back end of the season but that was frustrating tonight. We didn’t play well. Our forwards were dominated and we lacked cohesion but we were within inches of winning it despite that. Sio scores one of those early chances, the drop goal goes over, evalds keeps hold of that grubber near the end. Any of those and we win. But equally it felt like a better team would have done a number on us. What to make of it
