Yep they should have had a prelim contest as they did in the T20 cricket…minnows against minnows for places in main comp. With reasonable prices and then filled the grounds with kids

The ‘minnows’ on the mens WC had to go through qualifying rounds - the 8 quarter finalists from 2017 auto qualified. The other 8 had to get through qualifiers en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Men%27s_Rugby_League_World_Cup_qualificationThe womens and wheelchair teams were selected based on a range of criteria, reflecting the development of the sports. I suspect that will change for future WCs based on the success of the two tournaments this year I have loved watching the so called smaller teams in all 3 tournaments. Long may the expansion continue

As they did in the cricket and a prelim World Cup games pool would lead to better games for the minnows with some then going into final phase. For me too many pointless one sided games, but we all like different things

Now do i keep watching. NZ v Oz Women knocking nine bells out of each other, getting up and playing on OR MU, where the wind keeps blowing players over, they roll on th3 ground, abuse the ref and then appeal continuously until they get subbed in floods of tears. Difficult one
These women are awesome
Perhaps a bit of rehabilitation for Greenwood and Mendez…if only

In a moment of rare positivity from a pundit Wilkin said the WC shows what SL fans have to look forward to next season and he was spot on. I've no doubt we'll have reffing like that to look forward to as well. Total has a specific negative WC thread which is always useful and forward looking. Miserable Pleaders!
Brown has been seeing the positives in the England performances and I really enjoyed his comments.
Maybe there Could be a Permanent Negative moan & whinge thread on this forum. It'd be quite popular with certain Members year round. El presidente carne !?!?.

Some may say that this whole site is a negative moan and whinge. Perhaps a separate thread called 'Positive thoughts and uplifting posts only' may be more beneficial?

If it was Carnster I wouldn't bother posting.
"Perhaps a separate thread called 'Positive thoughts and uplifting posts only' may be more beneficial? "
All RL fans, pundits, ne'erdowells and scallywags need a good dose of compulsory positivity to help them remember the RL is TGG and they've actually won the sports fans lottery.

A number of sports question the involvement of smaller teams when they are heavily beaten. I think this is narrow minded as teams need exposure to promote the game and improve. Cricket is a prime example of so called minnows now beating established countries.

Yes, and although it isn't said out loud, it's a ridiculous argument that has done so much prevent RL from having a much bigger footprint worldwide.
I think it stems from Oz, for the most part, as they can barely be arsed to turn up to play England and that's based on a huge helping of silly shortsighted arrogance.

Happy to say I've watched plenty of matches in the WC across all 4 formats of men's, women's, PDRL & wheelchair and it's been great. Yeah there's been some blowouts but they happen in all sports and like has been said above, some of these "whipping boys/girls" will be throwing up shocks in the next 15/20 years once the sport gets established & standards rise. It's really exciting to see what the make up of the next 2/3 WC's will look like if we can get this right for a change.🤞
Now I'm going to go a little O/T here and call myself out. For years I've derided women for failing to appreciate the sporting skills of handsome male athletes as they're more focused on "their lovely bum". Well looks like this phenomenon isn't exclusive to the ladies as I've been admiring some fantastic pairs of legs on show in last night's Aus-NZ match.😋 In my defence, I am able to explain the offside rule so I think that justifies it a little.😁

Please expand? The Aussies use lots of pathetic excuses not to play internationals, mostly the pundits and a few administrators but their influence goes well beyond their areas.
The argument that blow outs are a big problem and make internationals useless is never made when there are NRL or even SOO blow outs, no suggestion that teams shouldn't be included or avoided or fixtures scrapped. But that's exactly what's being put forward about the WC.
