They nearly got the final they wanted, then the real Samoa turned up. Either way, I still can't get it that two teams from same group meet in semi, surely they should have been in different semis, even if they meet again in final,I could understand that. I understand your point and I agree that teams from the same group should meet again in the final and not before. However, it would have made no difference. On that first half performance yesterday, any of the other teams would have beaten us, Aus, NZ, even Tonga (remember their quarter final against Samoa!). We didn't play well, we made too many mistakes and we were a bit off the pace. A bad day at the office.

I believe that 7 of the Samoa side have won the Ausies grand final they are playing to an higher standard than our boys We have not won anything since 1970 that should tell the owners of Saints and Wigan Leeds and the rest something our games not as good.We probably will not win again in my life time I am 75 but we live in hope

Let’s face it there was a bit of a Dads Army out there and not fit or good enough over 80 mins for this standard of RL, Cooper, Watkins, Tomkins, Hill, Mcillorum….hopefully with Hall none of them will play at this level again. And Wane seems to be playing RL from 10 years ago.
Our Spine…dreadful, never functioned…Tomkins and Mcillorum past it….Welsby never a stand off, Williams our MoM. Headless leaderless chickens during the Golden Point…and where was Gaz Obrien when you need him😉
Lomax would have made a big difference, but Wane could have had Welsby fb, Tomkins or Sneyd scrum half, Williams, Radley hooker as a better spine.
But I’m glad we don’t have the embarrassment of having Oz put 50+ points against us in a Final

Then in the eighties it started to change and not for the better.I don't have an answer just opinions like every one else What I do think is that over there they think more about the game than we do,I think over here its more about individual's clubs In my opinion if the top clubs from here were in the N R L they would struggle Let's face it we are just not good enough end off

It is a bad time, when you've just lost, to start a post mortem.
It didn't start to change Dixon although there were plenty of warning signs. The Aussies simply progressed while we rested on historical laurels.
Max Krilich's Roos arrived and we were left wondering what we'd been playing all those years.
There have been plenty of times we've had quality players enough to take a win over them but the realchanges needed take time, effort, will and resources.
If we were not good enough end of, the NRL would show no interest in any English players.
SOO is just one way in which the Aussies ensure they stay dominant.
There was alot more to this but I don't think an essay by me would help.

It seems to me they don't want money

Ticket prices ridiculous Dixon, I was told £150 at the Final where we’d wanted to sit, so I stopped asking. We’d planned to go to a few but because of the stupid prices only went to the Fiji prelim match, where we were told West Stand, half empty, was only for guests…but we’re from Salford #nd did get in
Grounds half empty, why not fill half or so of each ground with school kids? But it’s RL Dixon.

The after WC investigation should be interesting crowds at the match, television numbers, ticket prices ... no doubt a bit of soul searching and then blaming the fans.
There was alot to praise abour Aunty's coverage but there were many things that showed they had a team that was neither used to, nor comfortable with RL as a sport.
The positivity shown in the wheelchair coverage was in marked contrast to much of the punditry/ commentary on the men's WC.
A great deal of it illustrated how much RL is a sport with a huge inferiority complex in these shores.

But it’s RL Dixon. Are the prices ridiculous when compared to other events ? FA Cup Final charges same ! Rugby Union prices are way higher than our great game. If you want Good seats to a West End show you pay over £100, tickets to watch Pink at Bolton are a minimum £114. We have waited 9 years since the last World Cup and probably won't see another for another 11 years on these shores.

I agree to an extent C but lots of grounds had lots of space so there must be something amiss

Jeez well I've been off here for a rew days and seems there's been plenty of action and some in-fighting amongst our huge fanbase!😂
So I've read the last few pages and agree with a fair bit, disagree with a fair bit also, but hey it's about opinions and we're not always right eh? So here's my two penneth...
Wane - Way too loyal to some of his previous club players. Tomkins way past his best & Mcllorum absolutely anonymous all tournament. Welsby should've played FB, Sneyd in the halves with Williams (who had a good WC). Ackers should've been in the team instead of MM. He'd have caused the Samoan big boys no end of problems around the ruck with his scoots and I don't think I saw MM scoot once all tournament.
Welsby was very poor but is probably going to be an England great when he retires so we need to cut him a bit of slack. Young had a shocker but again could well be England's top try scorer by the time he hangs the boots up. The pre-tournamemt worry I had about Kallum getting found out against the best centres in the world materialised. TBF to him he isn't getting in that team in the centres if Newman was fit BUT he had a good WC overall and for me would've justified a spot in the 2nd row to also have been used as back-up centre. He can hold his head up and probably did better than most of us expected.
I was one of the biggest critics of Hill's inclusion in the squad but I'll hold my hands up and say I was wrong. Along with Burgess I thought he was outstanding all WC and Whitehead was superb against Samoa. It's a shame he probably won't make 2025. The fact is we just didn't show up. For all the hype about Samoa we lost by 1 point to them despite pretty much doing everything wrong on the day. The game (mis)management in extra-time was absolutely criminal (Welsby knock on and Tomkins forward pass). We made plenty of metres on those couple of sets and all it needed was a long kick and then force the error. Instead we gift wrapped them the chance to line up the DG twice. Just extremely dumb play and summed up our afternoon. We've got a lot of potential in this squad and with the likes of Dodd, Gannon, Newman to come in so in 3 years I think we'll give a decent account of ourselves.
Now with regards ticketing they got it all wrong. Pricing was all over the place and way too high for some of the group games involving the minnows. Then the disparity between the cheap & expensive seats in the knockout stages was ridiculous. RL is not Football or Union where a certain subset of fans are more than happy to be fleeced by overpriced tickets. Should've kept the margin between the lowest & highest priced tickets narrower and crowds would've been bigger. The fact I couldn't get tickets for England v PNG in a stand that was "sold out" but had hundreds of empty seats when watching on TV sums up the whole debacle.

Actually I agree with most of that SS, but hadn’t got the 3nergy to put it down. Good summary.
Think I’d have started with Radley at hooker and Ackers off the bench tho….v fierce early doors.

I think there's one thing we can all agree on there was no alternative plan, no extra strategy available.
It is the kind of coaching that comes from a dominant position and experience in your background.
Because the England coach will always be from the top set it will lend itself to this simply because they almost never have to; the odd loss measured against 90% plus wins makes you more self congratulatory than self reflecting. It also make the teams you coach a bit monotone to watch.
I hope we never get to that stage.
