OK compared to the previous two years we've had a lot more players absent throughout the season with injuries and suspensions. Marshall has been forced to make constant team selection changes and has never had the luxury of choosing from anywhere close to a fully fit squad (with players challenging for a 17 spot). This for me is why it's more difficult to make a judgement on his ability as a head coach but could also be masking the fact he's not very good at his job.
Despite the obstacles he's faced what I do see is a team that lacks discipline and doesn't look anywhere near as organised, dogged and slick with the ball in hand. I ask the question has he really improved any player this year or have they underperformed? I listen to his post match interviews after a defeat and he's a little too placid and calm for my liking and seems to lack passion which must translate to the players in the dressing room. I know you don't want a loose cannon with a hot head screaming and shouting all the time but there are occasions you have to show a poor performance hurts deeply and that you intend to do all that you can to improve.
This brings me to the question do you feel confident Marshall is the right coach for us given his own players to work with and a relatively healthy squad or could the club be wasting precious time persevering with the wrong choice of coach for Salford? And if you have seen encouraging signs and improvements in any areas what are they?

Many. That is as they say,the 64, 000 dollar question. As I have said in an earlier post I dont go with this it's not their players,so they a coach can't be juged the example I used was Frank Lampard at Chelsea sacked someone else comes in and with the same players wins the Champions League.Every club as had issues to deal with so not an excuse their, Less money spent he new that when he took over,no excuse their then I would personally bring in someone else I don't think it will happen, lastly if it doesn't happen and the reason is we can't afford to,then we might as well fold now.

Gut feeling is that he won’t be successful with us. ‘Not his players’ doesn’t cut it. When he has had certain players available he’s either not picked them or played them out of position. Where he’s demonstrably failed was his project to make Sarge a full back. I think he was forced, because of others being unavailable,to pick Inu. I think Watson also had that issue but the old fella just does his thing and influences games. Discipline is a massive failure, too. I would be delighted to be proved wrong

I really want Marshall to succeed like I'm sure many other fans do. However, if we finish the season on the back of 6 straight defeats with no encouraging signs of improvement, his position will become untenable. The pressure is undoubtedly on him now and he needs to rally the remaining troops with some tough fixtures ahead to save his job.

I have a feeling there will be a change in the closed season. I think Marshall will stay, but would not be surprised to see Lee Briers coming in. I think Danny Orr is looking to take the step up to being a coach and Briers will step in. Ive heard this from a couple of people, but may just be idle talk.

Firstly, I'd love this thread to remain as it is, with people calmly and reasonably asking and answering questions, let's keep it that way please.
From my point of view I want nothing more than to see my club doing well. I don't expect miracles, and I'm a realist. I really would like to see RM succeed but his time is running short on this. Nobody wants the obstacles that this season has provided, but the obstacles are generally there for all clubs and we're not special on that front. Every newly appointed coach inherits a team, and I agree with Dixon13 in that it's how a coach injects his ideas and structures into a team of strangers that determines things, and not access to desirable signings, which let's face it we're never going to be able to provide much more than budget signings. Although to be fair to Blease and the board they pull out some master strokes on this front.
As for what RM has provided since he's come, I'm at a loss to see any positives really. We've beat Hudds twice, but I think that's more down to players proving points than RM. We have become the worst disciplined side in SL, we've become obviously more unfit than I've seen in a few seasons, and one of the most lacklustre attacking/defensive/game strategy Salford sides I've seen. We have some very talented individuals and IW's talent was to get the most out of what he had. Well we can certainly say that RM doesn't possess that same skill and with arguably better players at his disposal.
For me, barring a massive turn around in the run in to the end of the season we're in for more difficulties next season. I really hope I'm made to regret these predictions. I'll gladly raise my hand and say I was woefully wrong but I don't think I will have to.

I think we all knew that Watson was always going to be a hard act to follow after two unexpected cup finals in the previous couple of years. I admit I was in full support of Marshall’s appointment when the club made the announcement. I though he would be a hungry young British coach with experience as a head coach at Halifax and being assistant at Warrington and Saints under top experienced coaches was the perfect grounding for his development. Sadly it hasn’t quite worked out as I expected it would so far and I’m becoming less confident and more disillusioned by each game.
If you look at Darryl Powell who failed initially as coach at Leeds and undoubtedly learned a lot from his early mistakes on reflection and turned out to be relatively successful at Cas. I just think time is ticking and Marshall needs to sit down and reevaluate his methods quickly or his golden career opportunity he’s been given at Salford could soon come to an abrupt ending. The difference being between Powell and Marshall is that if you fail miserably at Salford it’s extremely unlikely you’ll get another head coaching opportunity in SL. It’s now either time for him to take a different approach or walk away and be honest with himself and admit he’s not cut out for a head coaching position in SL. As someone once told me if you keep doing the same things don’t expect a different result.
As Carnster says above I also want nothing more than the club to do well and I want him to be a success, but it’s looking extremely unlikely.

Ridiculous team selections. No game plan, indiscipline, boring rugby. All hallmarks of when IW came. He turned it round. Will RM. I don’t think so

I think RM will be a decent coach at some point, I just don't think it's going to be at this point in his career.

I can’t see it. We have gone backwards this season. We have been spoilt the last two seasons and with Covid etc it has been a difficult season.
However, I can’t see anything positive to take into next season. I still don’t see a plan emerging, a style of play or structure. Marshall’s rhetoric doesn’t match what we have seen on the pitch.
Ian Blease was sat across the aisle from me. Lots of head shaking and looked fed up. Didn’t show any emotion when we scored. Perhaps he is as fed up and bored with this season as the rest of us.

I think this sums up exactly how a lot of fans feel. Marshall has had his chance and does not convince me he will turn things around. If as speculated on this forum an unproven coach (RM) at Super League level has negotiated an exit package then this is a problem and very short sighted from the Club when agreeing terms. For me we need a coach who can motivate players and show he has a game plan - none of which Marshall has shown to this point.

I am consistent with my views on this one. RM is clearly building the team for 2022 with HIS choice of players to do a pre-season and then roar off the grid. We shall all see if this approach is successful but because of the funding reduction quite clearly players will either accept less or they will have to go elsewhere so I feel there will be a big turn around of players. Even so unless we all see an improvement after 10 matches in 2022 then we will have to look at things again.
Now - are there any British alternatives? The club surely cannot afford an overseas coach what with housing, cars, family etc so it has to be a British man. So - who are the possible experienced available men? McDermott, Noble, Kear, Duffy, Chester etc - well for me none of them fit the bill. So that`s a negative.
Also for all you Marshall foes - look what Watto has done at Huddersfield with a HUGE cash investment as well. A team that have gone backwards since last season. Maybe he will become available shortly!

Maybe he will become available shortly! I understand your thinking with the steady approach and slow building. I'd be worried that a club like ours can't afford to wait too long, however long that period may be. While we need to have long term goals the club desperately need short term success from somewhere to boost crowd numbers, especially with a potential ground move. It's a fine juggling act by the club to make a decision on how long you give a new coach. Personally, it's not the results that are really concerning me. It's the disjointed and general poor way the team goes about its work and the coaching staff's inability to make any mark on fixing the obvious problems. If I could see a glimmer of something positive that I could see that RM and DO actually do. Their personal marks on the teams structure and mentality then I would be with you on this topic one hundred percent. As for potential replacements, that's not an easy question. I think that, like IW, our club had gained in stature after the GF and CC final. While IW cashed his in, I fear that we've lost any capital we've made over the last few years, so attracting a decent coach with a good track record is pretty slim imo. As much as I dislike McDermott he's the type of character that would have whipped this team into shape. Noble is past it by a long way. Kear always gets the best out of what he's got. Duffy and Chester I don't think are up to it. It would probably have to be an untried coach or try to tempt away a decent Championship coach. There's no easy options in any of this is there?

I have always backed PK & IB & would do so whatever they decide to do - I just hope that we give them more time.
