There are a couple of refs who when they officiate our games it makes my heart sink. Having said that the wife's always on hand to make me see how silly that is.
Then again coaches need to get a grip and stop blaming them when they lose.
Although there are times when the officials make decisions that might be wrong it has to be recognised as one of the toughest roles in sport.
The one and only thing I liked about K Tamati as coach was when he punished wingers like Tex for mistakes by sticking him in the pack. So I think rather than a fine or ban the punishments for coaches having a go at SL refs should be doing the refs course and then having to officiate a game.
It might be a kids match (and some of them would love their SL coach to be in charge) & if they continue to transgress they do the next level and officiate there.
I'm well aware Watto was guilty of this a while ago but I think that even so, it's a punishment that suits the crime, harms no one and may even do some good! And it's far more healthy for coaches than the alternative of me sending the missus round to theirs to sort them out.

Agree 100% Russ. I used to moan about refs a lot but then I realised every team had fans who claimed refs were biased against their team (even ones that win stuff) and thought maybe it’s not the refs who are biased Then I had to ref junior games when I was coaching my lads team. I’ve never complained about refs since. I wouldn’t be a pro ref for all the money in the world, never mind the relative pittance they get

Yes every fan is critical of referee's when they loose. And I know I wouldn't have it for a gold clock. But surely they are not beyond reproach.I think they should face the media like managers in the prem or coaches in our game.Managers and coaches get the sack on decisions made by them.No they should be accountable. I think sometimes they think they are the star attraction.

We're talking about coaches and fans views and bashing of refs. Also it's more like a witch hunt or a lynching because we're passionate about our side we're not only borderline loonies, we've lost all sense of balance as well. This is all great for being a fan but useless for sensible analysis and assessment.
As for the press, well they're not a helpful bunch at the best of times, I don't think trial by journos is ever a good idea.
And we've not even metioned the awful insults and threatening behaviour towards them.
Coaches are always desperate and likely to blame the bounce of the ball as the ref, they should certainly know better & act like it.

My lad started refereeing last year and being on the sideline was interesting - some of the comments aimed at a 14 year old were staggering.
I was watching the games as a neutral and again with the non- Salford games you can see the ref’s get most right or at least you can see why decisions have been made .
Rugby has a lot more grey areas such as ball strip v knock on where it’s down to the referees interpretation at that point rather than a black or white decision, I think the frustration comes when penalty counts are lob sided for off sides etc when there doesn’t seem to be much difference between side A or side B
Being able to hear the ref’s lately has helped too, an example was Ormondroyd getting told he was offside by the ref but then getting involved in the tackle - early calls by the ref’s need to be spot on but again if you notice a player stealing yards everytime then a ref will watch that player more than others

The abuse they receive, particularly at amateur level, is disgraceful but they do seem to want centre stage in Superleague. It’s nothing like as bad in the NRL. I certainly don’t believe they’re bent, not one bit,and it’s a tough gig but it’s their choice to do it ! Theres a shortage of quality refs. My heart sinks most of the time when I see who’s reffing us. Thaler shows how it can be done

Yes Thaler good, takes his time and doesn't just react. Pity he didn't ref the Finsl last year. If you remember the ref who did went to ref some of the internationals and was dropped for poor reffing. Obviously in a tackle it really difficult. And touch judges now seem to be calling forward passes.
My main gripe is the offside at the ptb. Dwyer at Leeds a couple of Warrington and Cas players, always flying out off side. And Wigan, St Helens rarely go back 10. Perhaps touch judge and ref need to work hard on this or take teams back further.
The stupid thing is that things are seen on TV and not reported by the video ref to the on field ref. They do this in Union and has improved their reffing; even getting knock ons and forward passes right. Possibly that's part of the answer.
It's there why not use it

I think one of the mid season rule changes in the NRL is that the video ref can now refer issues to the onfield ref

The Sky discussion on refs was interesting as was DP's argument that he was just after improving refs and asking what was wrong with that.
The performance of both sides was weird to say the least but I thought the ref was really good. No doubt next week with SRD I'll be cursing him or whoeve else refs but I'm just trying to get them to be better..... honest!

SuperLeague hasn't got the biggest Pool of Referees and the one's we have Are a bit Hit & Miss. To be honest I base every Referee's performance on a Infamous SRD Game at the Willows Against Cardiff Dragons 1983/1984 ,The Git in the Middle was A Ref called Stan Wall, his performance that Night And the Reds in the Shed reaction to him at Full Time Ended up in a Fine and the Construction of the Protective shelter in Bright Red being built from the Changing rooms to the Pitchside, To this day I have a Crystal Clear memory of 5-6 pies and A Burger & Hot Dog hitting the Refs Bald head within Five seconds, John Wilkinson Had to pay the cost of a replacement Refs uniform, A Cardiff forward Big bloke with Blond hair received the Contents of a Cup of Bovril Right on his Nose, And the Bloke who threw it was the Curate of the Church that used to be on the Jct of Weaste Lane & Langworthy Rd. So putting it in Perspective The Refs are not as bad as it seems Probably.

In tonight's game Powell was his usual miserable ' the world's agsinst me' self moaning about his players being injured and the 12-3 against penalty count. But for once a ref had the balls to penalise Cas at home, who are the team who cheat most in any match. And for once Wells became independent and backed the ref.
Powell is like a spoilt child who can't get his own way and the refs have to suffer that. But I just hope they keep improving. Our semi final against Wigan with Thaler was really well reffed but the Final by an inexperienced ref was a disgrace. Sadly he makes firm decisions still but too quickly and getting them wrong and doesn't seem to be being helped by say Thaler or even Child. That's the sad point: just keep improving
