Mostly decided in international games like when Makinson was picked the other year.

I believe the primary criteria is international performance and he’s been superb for Tonga. Imagine if he won it. A Salford player with Golden boot and MoS in the same season and not even the same player! That would be surreal.

That occurred to me when I posted. Odd Golden boot is judged on International performance. As it stands, it's almost certainly going to go to a Tongan player, and rightly so. If I was a betting man I'd put money on BMM to get it. His performance against Australia was incredible. Battered them in both attack and defense for 80 minutes. Tui has been great over their games, but I'd think it's BMM's to lose.

BMM isn’t on the short list according to Total RL...
“[Lolohea] is joined on the shortlist by Tongan Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Kiwi duo Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves along with Australians Damian Cook and Payne Haas.
John Bateman is also on the shortlist after his excellent performances for Great Britain, while another Super League player, St Helens centre Kevin Naiqama, has also been nominated alongside fellow Fiji representatives Viliame Kikau and Brandon Wakeman.”
Tui got to be in with a strong shout after Tonga bear Australia. I’m surprised either BMM or Taumilola aren’t on the list. Cook and Haas were both excellent against the kiwis. There are so few RL International games though it’s hard to give it too much credence. But I’d still be buzzing to have the golden boot winner playing for us. 1st time since Garry Jack 😂

On a Facebook page Bateman being touted a shoe in, not sure as we didn't actually win any games with him in. Would be great to see Tui win it.

Is this only based on International games?
Sorry but if it is then it's totally pointless as there has been so few, if we're honest it must surely go to an Aussie as they obviously the most successful, my vote would go to Tedesco or Cook who are both virtually unstoppable.

Yes it’s based solely on internationals now. Hence why Makinson won it last year after his stellar performances for England against NZ
I agree the lack of internationals diminishes it a little but the international scene is growing and I think it will potentially help players want to be available for internationals if there is an award just for that

Everyone moans whatever the criteria (they only play in England/they only won because they play in the NRL/they only won because they had two decent international games).
For what it’s worth I think this is the right way to do it but yes they need more structured internationals to make it credible. Given the success of some of the ‘smaller’ teams recently they should look to do that.
Basing it on club performances is problematic because the only cross-hemisphere game we have is basically a glorified friendly unlike football where the best sides have regular competition. Internationals are the best against the best from whatever league they play in - if a Tongan wins it after beating 2 of the top 3 sides in the world then I won’t be belittling their achievement.
I was trying to take a break for the off season but all the rugby league news coverage has pulled me back in!

After this weekend all internationals are finished (as if a GB/England player had a cat in Hells chance anyway) so when can we start celebrating Tui being the best player in the world?

Tui hasn’t made the shortlist of 3 for the award. The winner will be one from:
🇹🇴 Sio Siua Taukeiaho 🇳🇿 Roger Tuivasa-Sheck 🇳🇿 Jared Waerea-Hargreaves
(According to Love Rugby League on Facebook)
