In the interests of public order
The thread formerly known as QUALITY STREET GANG (1) – MIKE COULMAN will be referred to as Aled Mardby shouting coach (1) from this moment on.
Who was Mike Coulman? He was someone else!

MC was originally thought to be a bit of a flat track bully, like scoring direct from a kick off at Blackpool, until he played against Artie Beetson and flattened him,if my memory serves me correctly. Rumoured not to get on too well with Colin Dixon who wasn’t too keen on passing to him. I remember his game for England RU where I think he scored direct from a lineout. Reportedly a sprinter and boxer, too. Top player and great servant to the club.

The rumour you mentioned is a load of rubbish Mike and Colin were the best of mates.Mike still attends games you can ask him.

I’m pleased about that, the rumour being untrue. There was one game,a cup tie I think, where Dixon broke, came to the full back, had Coulman completely free outside him,saw him but died with the ball. Just one of those things,I assume.

Just one of those things,I assume. I think the first time Murphy used the term The QSG was in the club. After the first training session he had with the team, their was a question and answer in the club all the team were sat on the stage and Murphy introduced him self said what he was hoping to achieve then he said when he was at Warrington someone said who are we playing at the weekend and Murphy said the quality street gang at the Willows and it got into the press. When Murphy came to Salford Brian Snape had left to live in the Isle of Man with bad health and we had no money. The great days were coming to an end.

I do love the amount of myths and stories related to this.
I was there the night MC changed from r-yawn pygmy into a no nonsense RL forward.
As so often then it wasn't pretty but in the terms of the period the right thing to do.
Having been punched without the ball, he ignored where the play was, sought out the offending person, laid him out. He was so far from the ball he could have been in the club bar.

Quality Street Gang was a backhanded compliment – stunning on the outside, soft in the middle.
